VMware announced Project Enzo the day before Citrix Synergy, and what an announcement!
All the cool stuff around VM Forking (now Instant Clone), App Volumes, and User Environment Manager (formerly Immidio) have come together to help create a truly impressive offering.
VMware have made no secret that their strategy is now any product should be built with cloud in mind, allowing multi tenancy, hybrid deployments etc. Enzo is no exception supporting hybrid deployments and the all important “elastic” workload capabilities.
Project Enzo follows hot on the heels of EvoRail which used a similar simplified deployment method leveraging OEM partner relationships to deliver the converged infrastructure required, allowing simpler deployments. However, many felt that this simplification in itself brings vendor lock in, which is always on a company’s radar in one form or another.
The highlights of Project Enzo are fairly staggering as shown below (extracted from the official release)
- Simple Out of the Box Set-Up – Virtual desktops and applications can be up and running in less than an hour.
- Create and Scale Desktops at Cloud Speed – VMware Instant Clone technology integrated with VMware App Volumes™ and VMware User Environment Management technologies will allow IT administrators to create and scale desktops at cloud speed – allowing up to 2,000 virtual desktops to be created in under 20 minutes.
- Eliminate Maintenance Windows With Seamless Updates – Maintenance windows will be eliminated with seamless updates that can be applied instantly to Windows images and applications.
- Hybrid Cloud Flexibility – Desktop and applications can be moved back and forth from on-premises datacenters to the cloud, along with the flexibility of using the cloud as a primary use case for everyday productivity, or secondary use cases for desktop bursting or disaster recovery.
- Right-Sizing Infrastructure Needs – More efficient assessment combined with operational and capital cost savings will enable Project Enzo to transform the economics for enterprise desktops by avoiding over-provisioning of resources.
One note of worth is this is still a Tech Preview and so the one vital piece missing is price. Desktops are certainly subject to more scrutiny on cost than most VSI projects and I will be keeping a close eye on how VMware plan to address this. One advantage they will have is that with such a tight ecosystem the prices can be controlled, and as a Citrix rep once told me “software licenses are always negotiable”. It is this licensing that VMware might be able to use to give it the edge in this competitive market given its now feature rich offerings are maturing.
I look forward to seeing the full solution, and hope that I get chance to look under the hood of the beast at some point.
If you have not had a chance to see it, there is a sales video here and if you fancy trying your luck and getting on the early access program, you can do that here
Exciting times ahead!
