A reminder of how things got fixed...
Another VMUG is upon us, and this time there is a twist. Being fans of Darren Woollards design talks at the UK VMUG, we wanted to bring some of that design knowledge to our event.
With that in mind we have created an event that blends design and troubleshooting in to one agenda with the focus firmly placed on education.

I recently had the daunting task of adding several hosts that had lots of NFS volumes attached, and adding them manually in the GUI would have taken ages.
To expedite this I wrote a little Powershell foreach statement that copied the volumes from one host to another. Granted I could have made this much smarter but it is one of those “quick and dirty” bits of script that got the job done. So how was it done? [Read more…]
VMware announced Project Enzo the day before Citrix Synergy, and what an announcement!
All the cool stuff around VM Forking (now Instant Clone), App Volumes, and User Environment Manager (formerly Immidio) have come together to help create a truly impressive offering.
VMware have made no secret that their strategy is now any product should be built with cloud in mind, allowing multi tenancy, hybrid deployments etc. Enzo is no exception supporting hybrid deployments and the all important “elastic” workload capabilities.
Project Enzo follows hot on the heels of EvoRail which used a similar simplified deployment method leveraging OEM partner relationships to deliver the converged infrastructure required, allowing simpler deployments. However, many felt that this simplification in itself brings vendor lock in, which is always on a company’s radar in one form or another.
The highlights of Project Enzo are fairly staggering as shown below (extracted from the official release)
One note of worth is this is still a Tech Preview and so the one vital piece missing is price. Desktops are certainly subject to more scrutiny on cost than most VSI projects and I will be keeping a close eye on how VMware plan to address this. One advantage they will have is that with such a tight ecosystem the prices can be controlled, and as a Citrix rep once told me “software licenses are always negotiable”. It is this licensing that VMware might be able to use to give it the edge in this competitive market given its now feature rich offerings are maturing.
I look forward to seeing the full solution, and hope that I get chance to look under the hood of the beast at some point.
